Cracked

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Asher came to me with a bloody fingertip, wailing, “I have a crack! The knife cracked my finger!”

I love his use of the word crack!

The damage wasn’t severe, just a small cut (er, crack) next to his nail. The cut was so small that I was very surprised to see the knife- a large, serrated steak knife- that caused it. The damage could have been much, much worse.

Asher never believes me when I tell him that something is dangerous. If I say it’s hot, he wants to touch it anyway. If I say he could get hurt, he wants to see if I’m right about that. If I ask him not to jump from his high perch, he jumps anyway and then points out, “See, I jumped off there and it didn’t kill me!” If I tell him that the spiders in the window well are poisonous, he tries to catch them. Telling Asher that something is dangerous, only seems to make the dangerous act even more appealing to him.

So I took the opportunity to give a little see-I-told-you-so-now-please-listen-to-mommy lecture about the knife.

“Asher, do you understand now that knives are dangerous?” I asked as I held a rag against his bleeding finger. ”This knife hurt you because you played with it. You shouldn’t touch knives. Knives will hurt you-”

Without missing a beat, Asher interrupted and said flippantly, “But, Mom, this doesn’t hurt.”

His tone made it clear that he knows that knives aren’t really as dangerous as I claim they are. Silly old Mom and her crazy overreactions…

Oh, this boy… :)

Bronco

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Maddie was hard at work, carefully making  bracelet by tying blue, orange, and white strings together.

“This is for Daddy,” she explained as she worked. “It’s a bronco bracelet. I don’t know what a bronco is, but I know Daddy likes them!”

(The Broncos are Daddy’s favorite football team.)

Weekend Vacation

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Several years ago we bought a 3-night stay in a condo at a very discounted price. Finally, with the paid-for stay set to “expire” at the end of this year, we decided we better clear a weekend and actually USE it!

We had such a great time!

We dropped Sophie off at “puppy hotel” on Thursday night, grabbed hamburgers, and headed off. We got there late and checked into our hotel room. It was the nicest hotel we’ve ever stayed in. There was a kitchen, sitting area, and a bedroom. There was a large, jetted tub and a standing shower that turned into a steam room. We bought groceries, which was so much cheaper than eating out for every meal would have been.

We enjoyed a late-night movie night with the kids and then got everyone settled into bed. Josh and Braden shared the pull-out couch, Maddie used the couch cushions to make her own little bed, Asher slept on the short love seat, Brenna slept on the hidden fold-out bed by the kitchen table (which she thought was super cool), Drew slept in a pack and play, and Jacob slept in the king bed with Mom and Dad. Room for everyone!

Friday morning we played at a giant indoor playground with a monkey theme. The kids had a great time and got out tons of energy as they played. We had packed a picnic lunch that morning at the hotel so we found a nice park to eat in. It was gorgeous! The kids climbed a tree and threw leaves.

We took a very long walk up a beautiful little path. The kids were troopers even though we walked a long way. Then we walked all the way up Main Street to a candy store. We bought treats and caramel apples and a few books in the neighboring bookstore. Main Street was darling! I was in love with how quaint and clean it was. It was so picturesque nestled in the mountains.

Rick kept the little guys in our room while I took the oldest four swimming in the big, warm hotel pool. We ate TV dinners in our hotel room (Braden called them “big lunchables with dessert”). We had another movie night and game night and introduced our older kids to the game, Settlers of Catan.

On Saturday we went swimming first thing in the morning. We went as a family this time. Jacob hated the pool and eventually just tolerated it. Drew relaxed completely in the pool and fell asleep. He looked so cute, all sweet and relaxed and sound asleep.

Braden stripped out of his life jacket and learned to dive and hold his breath under water. He loved to sit on the bottom of the pool and look around and then finally pop up for air. I was both impressed with and nervous about how fearless he was. He told me that he was an “ocean boy” and an “expert” at swimming.

After the pool, we ate lunch in town. It was our one “eat out” of the weekend. We ate outside on a restaurant patio and enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful surroundings. Our server put an empty plate right in front of our little Drew, who promptly grabbed it. It dropped and broke. Other than a broken plate, the meal was nice and everyone was well-behaved.

We rode the old trolley around town. The kids had a lot of fun just riding. We played at the hotel’s playground and then we put our oldest four kids into the Kids’ Club for an hour. It’s really designed as a fun area for kids to be babysat while parents ski or visit the spa. Our kids really wanted to try it. While they were busy, Rick enjoyed the adults only relaxation pool and I hung out with our little guys who were too young for the Kids’ Club. We ate yummy lasagna for dinner and then played in the hotel’s arcade and game room. We watched movies and played more games.

Sunday we cleaned up and checked out of the hotel. We played together at the park. The playground was one of the neatest I’ve ever seen. We ate another pre-packed picnic lunch before we finally headed for home.

On the way, we stopped to see grandparents. We had a great time visiting, playing, and eating a yummy dinner.

Cartwheeling

Maddie cartwheeled all the way home from the park. I love her free spirit!

Crazy Asher

Monday, October 17, 2011

He dumped dirt and dog food in the bathroom sink.

He ate a jar of peanut butter, while hiding under the crib.

He put celery sticks in the mayonnaise.

He “washed” his hair with nearly a full bottle of hand soap.

He put nail polish in his eye.

He swallowed a marble.

I overheard him say from the other room, “Hmmm. I wonder if this breaks.”

He’s a busy boy…

Poop Stories

Monday, October 17, 2011

Asher sauntered past me, with his usual confident swagger. I immediately smelled something foul as he walked by.

“Ash, are you poopy?” I questioned, even though I was sure I already knew the answer.

“Nope.”

He wasn’t poopy when I checked his diaper, but the stench was definitely coming from him. I sniffed him… bum, feet, pants, hands. HANDS! I washed them promptly.

This scenario happened again an hour later. After washing him up the second time, I asked, “Asher, have you been playing with poop today?”

“Nope,” Asher replied. “I’ve just been playing with dirt.”

“Did the dirt smell stinky?” I asked.

“Yup, it did. It was very, very stinky dirt.”

We had a talk about never, ever playing with stinky dirt…

More Funnies by Asher

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Asher is close to potty training. He knows exactly what to do and how to do it and when to do it, but the desire to get out of diapers just isn’t there yet. I think diapers are just awfully convenient for this busy boy. He’s got things to do! Plus, he regularly uses his diaper as a handy little pocket. (Thankfully he never wets when he has toys in there!)

I’m a relaxed potty trainer. I figure kids will potty train when they are ready. I avoid the stress, mess, and power struggle of potty training. I do encourage my little ones though and I am fine with offering rewards for little potty-trainees. Knowing how close Asher is to potty training, I decided to pull out the big guns and offer him a reward.

I told Asher that he could get a special prize whenever he started wearing underwear all the time instead of diapers. Hoping to get him excited about the idea, I asked him what he might want. Clapping his hands, Asher cried, “I want a real baby boy chick that is real!”

And, for the record, Asher is still asking about his real baby boy chick and he’s still wearing diapers as well. ;)

***

Asher ran to me to tell me the most exciting news. “Mom!” he cried, bubbling over with delight. “I saw a real fly and it was doing this!” He stopped talking and rubbed his little hands together. “I think he was washing his hands!” he cried with glee. Then he chuckled, “But he didn’t have any water!”

***

When I asked Asher to please stop dumping sand in his shirt, he protested, “But, Mom, I want to make a sandbox in there!”

***

Asher ran to me and said in his most excited voice, “Mom! I squirted the poison and it didn’t kill me!”

He was referring to spider barrier that I’d warned him not to touch. Since then he frequently points out times when he wasn’t killed by doing something I told him was dangerous. “Mom, I jumped off of there and it didn’t kill me!” “Mom, I touched that and it didn’t kill me.”

In fact, anytime I tell him not to do something, he quickly assures me, “But, Mom, it won’t kill me!”

***

I told Asher he couldn’t have another cookie and he burst into tears, sobbing, “Mom, that really scares me when you say that!”

Since then, this has also become his go-to phrase. Whenever I tell him he can’t have something he wants, he cries, “But, Mom, you’re scaring me!”

Football Ends

Football season is fun! I love being outside for games and letting the kids run in the grass while we wait. Asher usually finds mud, but I’ve started to think that, actually, maybe the mud finds him!

This year Rick coached two teams- Joshua’s team and Braden’s team. It was a fun season, but the double-duty coaching was sometimes stressful. Rick did a great job with his teams. He’s an excellent coach- the boys learned a lot and had fun at the same time. Both teams got better as the season progressed and it was fun to watch all the boys learn and improve and gain new skills. I liked being “the coach’s wife” and “the one with all those kids.”

Today the boys played their last football games of the season. We went as a family to cheer them on.

Joshua’s team played really well and won their game. It’s fun to see how far they’ve come since the start of the season. Joshua had some great moments, some hard blocks, a few good runs, some nice tackles, and a QB sack. He still lives up to his “flag monster” nickname that Rick gave him three years ago when he first played flag football.

I wish this picture was in focus, but it’s still cute. My handsome boy and his “Harry Potter” hair. (He’s growing it out for Halloween.)

We trucked across the fields to Braden’s game next. Rick warmed up with the kids as they arrived on the field and little Asher insisted on playing. He knew exactly what to do too- he went after the other boys’ flags aggressively and relentlessly.

When it was time for the game to start, Asher was sad because he still wanted to play. He didn’t like it when I suggested that he play on the sidelines. He also didn’t like it when I told him he was too little to play with the team.

“But, Mom,” he protested with giant tears rolling down his cheeks. “Remember that I am growing up fast?”

The little guys played a good game. It’s so cute to watch little ones play organized sports. These boys really perfected a fake hand-off this season!

Here are just a few more pictures from our morning at the football field…

What hurts?

Friday, October 14, 2011

Asher threw up several times during the night and then spent today feverish and lethargic. I wasn’t too concerned about how tired he was because a fever always seems to knock him out. He seemed to be dealing with a minor bug.

When he began to complain a lot of tummy pain, I got a little more concerned. It’s not like him to pinpoint pain that way. Then he told me his side hurt too and my concern mounted a little. Then he told me that his hair hurt… Hmmmm…

So, I asked him what else hurt. Turns out, everything was hurting. His knees hurt, his teeth, his eyes, his fingers, his toes. It all hurt so bad that he told me he probably needed to have milk in a baby bottle. :)

I asked him what hurt the very most. He thought for a moment and then responded, “It hurts the most when I climb a mountain and then I say mountain to you.”

:)

Asher is still running a fever and still resting on the couch. He has a bottle with milk in it.
